1. What kind of materials are fibercement sheets produced from? Up
- Fibercement sheets are prouced completely from natural materials. They consist of cellulose fiber, cement and fine silica. They are quite light out of being durable. Their handling and installation are so easy.
2. Is there any material harmful to human or environment in fibercement sheets? Up
- Fibercement sheets are completely human and environment friendly. They never contain any kind of matters which can be hazardous to human or environment. They do not have any gas emission dependent on time or atmospheric conditions.
3. How is the resistance of fibercement sheets against chemicals? Up
- Fibercement sheets are quite resistant against most chemicals. They are weak against lime dissolvers due to cement content. They are particularly resistant against alcalis.
4. Do fibercement sheets contain asbestos? Up
- Definitely NOT. Fibercement sheets are the environment and human friendly products which have been developed after the ban of asbestos. They contain soft wood pulp instead of asbestos to reinforce the cement and silica.
5. What is the behaviour of fibercement sheets during a possible fire? Up
- Fibercement sheets are A1 class incombustible materials in accordance with EN13501/1standard due to their content. There is not any fire risk originating from fibercement sheets or any possible fire will not spread even if the flame reaches to fibercement sheets. This is very important when insuring the buildings.
6. What is the average life for fibercement sheets? Up
- Fibercement sheets have a very long life due to the material content. There is not a definite life period determined for either cement or silica. Under normal conditions the users will not have any problem for at least 50 years.
7. What kind of paints should be used on fibercement sheets? Up
- Any water based acrilic paint for external application can be used with fibercement sheets. Oil based paints can not be used on these sheets.
8. What are the kinds of Turksiding and Hekim Board sheets according to surface look? Up
- Both categories have either smooth or cedar textured surface type. They have many advantages against wood although they look like real wood.
9. Does ultraviolet ray or sea water affect fibercement sheets? Up
- This is out of question. They can safely be used at the seaside regions or in places with extremely hot climatic conditions.
10. Are fibercement sheets permeable? Up
- Although they have a water absorption ratio of appr. 25% fibercement sheets are not permeable. Their water absorption ratio is less than ordinary concrete. Please check the section of “Tests carried out on fibercement sheets”.
11. What kind of tools do we need in processing fibercement products? Up
- Fibercement sheets have a very strong and abrasive structure originating from its raw material content. That is why they can not be processed with ordinary soft material drillers or cutters. The utilities for granite can be satisfactorily used in processing these sheets. The drills or blades with tungsten carbide tips are highly recommended. For detailed information please contact technical staff of HEKIM YAPI.
12. Do Fibercement sheets need plastering? What kind of caulks can be used? Up
- There is no need for plastering since the surface of fibercement sheets are quite smooth. Primer and seconder paint coats can be applied directly. This brings economy to the construction. The acrilic or polyurethane caulks should be used wherever needed (please consult the technical people of HEKIM YAPI). Unneutral caulks such as silicone should not be used with fibercement sheets.
13. Are fibercement sheets durable against impacts? Up
- Fibercement sheets have a very elastic structure due to the cellulose dispersed homogeniously in the texture. They are durable against impacts and hits. They are not affected from the debris caused by heavy wind.
14. Do the fibercement sheets emit any kind of gas? Up
- Absolutely NOT. They are naturally odorless. They never produce any kind of gas (even during the fire) which can be harmful to human or environment. They can safely be used at the places under the risk of fire. Vinil sidings which are claimed to be incombustible are melted and emit poisonous gases which may cause to deaths.
15. Do fibercement sheets have any contribution to sound or heat insulation? Up
- They are undoubtedly not insulation purposed materials. Nevertheless, they have good sound and heat insulation rates.
16. Are they affected by the insects? Up
- No, they are resistant against all kinds of insects which are harmful to wood.
17. How durable are they against atmospheric conditions? Up
- They are very durable against even to very heavy atmospheric conditions due to its material content and being autoclaved. Most of the test applied to the sheets within the context of relevant standard (European Norm EN 12467) are about hard environmental conditions and effects.
18. How safely can they be used in damp conditions? Up
- Hygrical movement of fibercement sheets are very low (0,5 mmm at full saturation after 24 hours). They are not affected by water or moisture. No structural decomposition or change are observed at the sheet samples when stored in 600 C water for 60 days.
19. What are the most popular application fields of fibercement sheets and sidings? Up
- Due to superior properties, the fibercement sheets and sidings are successfully used in prefabricated industrial buildings, prefabricated house manufacturing, container manufacturing, concrete buildings, steel constructed buildings, as exterior and interior wall panels, ceiling and floor cladding, roof covering material backer board, wet medium and ceramic underlayer, facade cladding, curtain wall(metal, timber, pvc) underlayer, furniture industry in the manufactures expected to be exposed to moisture. Since the strength and resistance against moisture of gypsum boards is very weak , fiber cement boards are now being used widely at interior applications. Laminated fibercement sheets are used at demountable or modular wall systems, internal facade and ceiling cladding of prefabricated buildings and containers, suspended ceilings, insulated internal wall panel production, wet medium claddings, cubical systems, furniture industry and applications which exposure to moisture is possible.
20. Are fibercement products compatible with other insulation materials? Up
- YES. They can freely be used with all known insulation materials. It is possible to produce, using EPS by suitable adhesion technic, quite practical ready to use wall panels.
21. What is the difference between interior and exterior sheets in the product lists? Up
- There is not any structural difference. Considering that exterior sheets are used for external applications and may expose to very heavy climatic conditions, some chemical additives are used to reduce the thermal movement rates of the sheets. Textured sheets and sidings are produced, unless demanded otherwise, with the exterior sheet formulation.
22. What is the average life of the paints applied on the fibercement sheets? Up
- This is the most frequently asked question. The life of the paint is related with the quality and place of application but not with the specification of the fibercement sheet. When used the proper and quality paint average life shall be not less than 15 years. Another condition for long paint life is the back side’s of the sheets or sidings exposure to moisture. Care at most should be given to water insulation at the fibercement sheet applications. Primering the unpainted sides and edges with a suitable insulation solution shall contribute and probably solve the problem.
